A wise person (I think it was @AlbrechtPhysics) once told me: the first important bar that a successful theory passes is the ‘ego’ test: you hear an enthusiastic talk on the theory and it is not given by one of its inventors.
idk. Merely having top tier supporters/cheerleaders/devotees rather than merely being a lone wolf, is itself an accomplishment. Going beyond that is another threshold still to being truly "establishment".

I think that should include it's top tier supporters/cheerleaders/devotees, who are often as enthusiastic as the theorist.
